Ordering abortion pills online may seem convenient; however, there is often more to consider than you may realize, and ordering them online bypasses medical checks that are important to protect your health.

Willowbrook Women’s Center is here to give you accurate information about abortion and your other options in a safe and confidential environment.

We also offer complimentary pregnancy testing and ultrasounds, so you can get the important medical details you need to know to protect your health.

1. A Pregnancy Test Doesn’t Give Enough Information

A pregnancy test only confirms the presence of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and doesn’t tell you how the pregnancy is developing.

A limited ultrasound at our center can confirm the pregnancy location, gestational age (how far along), and the viability (if there is a heartbeat). All of these details can affect your options and are important for protecting your health.

For example, an ultrasound can reveal if you are having an ectopic pregnancy, where the egg implants outside of the uterus. This is a medical emergency and cannot be treated with the abortion pill.

Gestational age matters too, as the abortion pill is only FDA-approved through ten weeks of pregnancy. Trying to calculate how far along you are based on your last period can be inaccurate.

There is also a possibility that you may have already miscarried, in which case, an abortion is no longer appropriate. Around 1 in 4 pregnancies end in a natural miscarriage, and it is possible to still receive a positive pregnancy test after loss due to the lingering hCG levels. An ultrasound will determine if there are signs that the pregnancy is continuing.

2. It Skips Key Medical Safeguards

Important factors such as your health history and medical conditions are often not reviewed when ordering the abortion pill online. There is also no way to verify how the drugs have been manufactured, obtained, dosed and more, which raises questions about the drugs quality and safety.

For this reason, the FDA does not recommend purchasing the abortion pill online.

3. The Abortion Pill Carries Risks

The abortion pill carries more risks and side effects than many people realize, including significant cramping and bleeding as the body expels the pregnancy. Other side effects are headaches, fever, diarrhea, and nausea.

Risks to be aware of are infection, heavy and prolonged bleeding, and an incomplete abortion, where pregnancy tissue can remain in the uterus. Mail-order abortion typically doesn’t include in-person medical checks; therefore, knowing what symptoms require medical attention can be difficult.
