What Is the Abortion Pill Method?
The abortion pill is also known as a medical abortion, using two drugs over a 24-48 hour period to terminate a pregnancy.
- The first drug, usually taken in a clinic, blocks the hormone progesterone.
- The second drug, taken at home, causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.
The abortion pill is FDA-approved through the first ten weeks of pregnancy.
Could I Be Ineligible?
Certain conditions could make you ineligible for the abortion pill due to possible complications. Here are some situations where it would not be recommended:
- Your pregnancy is past ten weeks of gestation.
- You currently have an intrauterine device (IUD) in place.
- You have a suspected ectopic pregnancy, which is a serious, life-threatening condition.
- You have specific medical conditions, such as bleeding disorders, heart or blood vessel diseases, severe liver, kidney, or lung disease, or an uncontrolled seizure disorder.
- You take blood thinners or certain steroid medications.
- You are unable to attend follow-up appointments or do not have access to emergency care.
- You have an allergy to the drugs used.
This is not an exhaustive list, so checking with a trusted provider is essential to confirm your eligibility. An ultrasound is also a critical step in checking the details of your pregnancy, such as how far along you are, its location, and viability.
