Finding out you are pregnant can be overwhelming on its own. If you are worried about how your partner will respond, you may feel even more pressure before you have had time to process the news yourself.

Maybe you are concerned they will be angry, disappointed, or want you to make a decision you are not ready to make. Before you focus on their reaction, take some time to consider your own feelings, your safety, and the information you need about your pregnancy.

Willowbrook Women’s Center can provide you with confidential support while you navigate this unplanned pregnancy. We offer no-cost pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, and information about your options.

Schedule your appointment today. You do not have to figure this out alone.

Your Safety Is a Priority

Not every difficult reaction is dangerous, but if you are genuinely afraid of what your partner might do when you tell them, take that concern seriously.

Think about how your partner has reacted to difficult situations in the past. Have they threatened you, intimidated you, become physically aggressive, or tried to control your decisions? If you’re concerned that telling your partner could put you in danger, you do not have to have that conversation.

Instead, consider talking privately with someone you trust who can help you think through your situation and make a safety plan. If you need support, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-7233. Call 911 if you are in immediate danger.

Figure Out How You Feel First

Before worrying about how your partner will react, give yourself some time to think about how you feel about the pregnancy. You may be scared, overwhelmed, excited, or unsure. You may also feel pressure to make a decision quickly because you are worried about what your partner will say or do.

Try to separate those concerns from your own thoughts about the pregnancy. Ask yourself: What did I feel when I first found out I was pregnant? What would continuing this pregnancy look like for me? What am I most worried about? What kind of support would I need if I chose to parent?

If your biggest concern is whether you could handle parenting, take some time to find out what help may actually be available to you. Financial assistance, parenting education, material resources, and practical support may give you more options than you realize right now.  Willowbrook Women’s Center can also connect you with available resources and assistance.

If You Want to Tell Them

If you decide to tell your partner about the pregnancy, think about how you want to have the conversation.

Consider choosing a time and place where you feel comfortable and can leave if the conversation becomes overwhelming. If you are concerned about their reaction, you may want to tell a trusted person beforehand so someone else knows what is happening.

You also do not have to have your pregnancy decision made before you tell your partner. You can let them know that you are still processing the news and gathering information.

Get the Important Details You Need

Learning more about your pregnancy can give you a clearer picture of your situation.

An ultrasound can tell you how far along you are, where the pregnancy is developing, and whether a fetal heartbeat is detected.

Taking the time to learn about parenting, adoption, and abortion can help you consider your circumstances and make a decision based on what you believe is right for you, rather than feeling pressured into a choice by someone else.

We Are Here to Help You
