Choosing how to handle an unplanned pregnancy could be one of the most significant decisions you’ll make in life. No one can legally force you to choose one option over another. Only you can decide what’s best.
What Are My Options?
You have three options: have an abortion, make an adoption plan, or choose to parent (or co-parent if your partner is willing). Let’s take a quick look at each:
Have an Abortion
Your partner may think having an abortion is a quick and easy fix, but they’re not the ones taking the drugs or going for surgery. It’s easy when you’re telling someone else to do something.
The FDA approves the use of abortion drugs through 10 weeks of pregnancy. The farther along you are, the less effective the drugs are. Knowing how many weeks you have been pregnant is vital. You may need a surgical procedure if you are later in your pregnancy. An ultrasound provides the necessary information about your pregnancy.
Since Missouri banned abortion, you need to travel. Before going, take advantage of a confidential, no-cost pre-abortion screening at one of our Willowbrook Women’s Center locations.
Make an Adoption Plan
Adoption is the legal process of switching the rights and responsibilities of parenthood from biological parents to adoptive parents. It is not co-parenting. It is a legal and final decision.
Placing your child for adoption is not an easy choice, but it gives you and your partner the ability to know your child without the day-to-day responsibilities of parenthood.
Today, the birth parents have the right to select the adoptive couple, choose the amount of contact they want, and essentially direct their child’s future. You and your partner can communicate with the adoptive family as much or as little as you want.
We cannot place your child for adoption but can offer referrals to reputable, licensed adoption specialists.
Choosing to Parent
Parenting brings many joys and challenges. It is rewarding, but it will change your lifestyle. We’re sure you have questions about finances, completing your education, working, or where you will live.
To parent successfully, you need people to come alongside you. We promise to be your support network. We partner with many professionals in our community to help you find the right resources and assistance.
We’ll help you get prenatal health care, housing, childbirth education, and material support, and we’ll be there after your baby is born. Whether your partner is with you or not, we’re here for you.
